On the surface, this looks like an innocuous collection of trivial letters. But start reading, and intersperced throughout the paragraphs is writing about the human struggle with the basic questions: How do we get what we want? How did we even decide? Why do people act the way they do? Are others truly happy, and if not, why do they lead their lives the way they do? Why does it seem that people with ideas, or dreams, are beaten down by the masses? When did everyone start acting like machines? What can we as individuals do to make our lives complete?
In that respect, the book becomes fascinating. This young women is asking these questions, flat-out, point-blank, in letters to her love, when most people don’t even think of these questions in their lives. She notices that people’s professed value systems don’t match how they act in their lives. She looks at everything as reasonably and as logically as she can, considering the way she has been brought up and the way she has been taught to live as a young woman in the late 21st century. And although she doesn’t come up with any definitive answers by the end of the book, in her own mind and on her own works to find her own cohesive set of values that will affect every aspect of her life.
