Our Population,
           Our Pain,
and Our Growth

Janet Kuypers
7/11/19, World Population Day

on this day, years ago,
someone tried to remove me
from this population

on this day, the U.N.
reaffirms the basic human right
to plan for a family —

not to lose family,
but to grow family, make a blueprint
for a better future

for all to be healthy
on a healthy planet, welcoming more
and more people

when I survived
the attempt to wipe me away
from this world

I knew I mustn’t
dwell on the pain or on the injustice
but on the recovery

it sometimes seemed
impossible, but I knew I ultimately
had no choice:

I must survive

after battling death,
our only choice is to celebrate all life
in this growing population

enshroud life in love
do not shun it, destroy it, or kill it
let humankind grow

see how what we do
affects other species and our planet
Earth itself — so know

that if we do not
squelch our population, we must
nurture it, treasure it

to make sure humans
know to keep peace with everything
so we can all, finally,

grow, together
