Verses on Display

Janet Kuypers
10/5/19, for the U.K.
National Poetry Day, the
1st Thursday in October

What if you arrived at Heathrow Airport
and saw Shakespeare verses on displays?
Or made it to the Paddington train station,
or maybe the Waterloo, to see T. S. Eliot
verses appearing on assorted light boards?

And what if you stopped, looked up at
those verses, maybe read a stanza and saw
how it may have changed your mood for one
brief moment before you went on your way...
maybe once in a while, you need a reminder

of how poetry infiltrates every aspect
of our lives, from nursery rhymes to rap,
to singing the country’s anthem in unison,
to not being able to shake that pop song
stuck in your head. Poetry throughout history

has been a medium to pull at your heartstrings,
to tell detailed stories, to teach our children,
to dance on your wedding day, and to make you
feel a bit more alive for once more. For poetry
is the gift that should be remembered everywhere.
