Earthrise Janet Kuypers 8/23/19 written on this day in 1666 when the first photo of Earth taken from the Moon It’s a pretty daunting task, landing man on the Moon, so first things first, NASA had to map the Moon, fast, so they’d know where to land. Almost three years before man landed on the moon, they launched Lunar Orbiter 1, yes, to orbit the Moon, but to photograph the surface. They needed to know where to land their manned ship, so they filled this orbiter with a full photo lab that took the photos and developed the film. And this flying photo lab took a third of the shuttle, the rest of the ship was only for power and propulsion in its hot and cold orbits with huge 70 mm film reels, clicking pics in zero gravity. Then during the mission, NASA thought to point the camera at Earth — this afterthought, this repositioning the satellite, was a high-risk maneuver — but NASA was willing to take that risk. And with that, NASA got the first Earthrise on film. In Soviet Union competition, the Earthrise showed the word that we’re all on this tiny blue ball, but with this view, all of our problems seem far too small.
