Verdant Green Janet Kuypers 8/9/19 Journey across these northern states leave the hustle and bustle of the morning commute in Chicago drive through Indiana, just past dawn see fog hovering over fields past Gary, Valparaiso, Notre Dame and keep your glasses on, not only because the sun in the cloudless sky is so ominously bright but because the fields you drive past are do      damn      bright every crevasse covered with lush, verdant leaves from moisture-rich fields springing forth life, and even your eyes need protection from that green. Because even Chicago had vines in bloom covering building, wrapping tree trunks, so continue through Ohio, and beyond the standing bales of hay lift your sunglasses every once in a while just to shock your eyes with the verdant green all around you. Even the metal fences are covered with thick lush foliage, because everything grows here, everything is alive with a force you’ve been aching to feel since subjected to the semi arid desert summers of triple digits and no water to quench your soul. Look to your left, see acres of corn stalks, and to your right broad leaves of protein-rich beans. It may shock your senses, but this is life and you need to remind yourself of this brightness of life before you enter Pennsylvania and need to pop your ears from the rising and falling mountains covered in forests you could only dream about. Inhale, take a deep breath, and breathe life in. Believe it of not, it gets more moist the further east you go, and the plants here are the proof. They’re giving you the oxygen you need; thank them by letting out your deep carbon dioxide breath. Fly past the occasional flowers sprouting along the road as you journey, and smile when you see how vibrant life can be.
