Every Day is
Sweetest Day

Janet Kuypers
10/19/19, on Sweetest Day
(the 3rd Saturday in October)

Concocted by candy makers
this mid-western U.S. holiday
was spearheaded by the
“Sweetest Day Committee”
to give away boxes of candy.

Since Sweetest day was
invented for companies
to make more money,
it has been branded as
a “Hallmark holiday”
(even though Hallmark
has nothing to do with it).

And it’s true, it’s just another
generic man-made holiday,
but my first date
with my first boyfriend
was on Sweetest Day,
and he took me to
the nicest restaurant in town
and treated me like a princess...

so, I may be biased.

It might be romantic of me
to try to romanticize Sweetest Day,
but remember that Aristotle said
that Romanticism
was not depicting life as it was
but how it should be,
how it ought to be...

Because if you meet that
just right someone,
who will give you roses
after knowing you only five days,
who will draw baths for you,
who would carry you down a mountain,
you may then start to wonder
what you even need
that Hallmark holiday for anyway.
Every day is the sweetest day
when you meet that
just right someone.

Because...
how sweet it is, indeed,
once you realize
that every day
is the sweetest day.
