I have printed some of my baseball-themed poems in recent issues of cc&’d and Down in the Dirt magazine issue books; I’ve shared some of these poems in poetry readings in recent “’Poetic License”’ open mic get-togethers, but seeing this memory from 9 years ago today for the chapbook of all of the poems read at 2015 Poetry Bomb (my LAST in Chicago, at Wrigley Field) makes me realize that Scars Publications won’t be releasing a chapbook for this year’s 2024 Poetry Bomb because since COVID19 I’ve been reading poems from books people can order instead. Since I did the annual Poetry Bomb in Chicago, I have found different places to read poetry. This post from 8 years ago today is at the Bagdad Cemetery, near the filming of some of *Texas Chainsaw Massacre*, where I read poetry for the 2016 Poetry Bomb. I am reading in Salado this Saturday for the “2024 ANIMAL TALES ANTHOLOGY LAUNCH”, but Sunday afternoon (3:30PM CST) is the “2024 Poetry Bomb” (where you pick a place people normally don’t hear poetry to perform it for a few hours). I *still* haven’t chosen a novel new place to read, so if no new suggestions come for reading places this Sunday (I’ve also already been to The Alamo, the now-closed Graffiti Wall, and the Branch Davidian compound), I may go either to the outdoor grain tower of the now-closed Circle Brewing Company (before another company tears that tower down), or if it’s raining I might end up at Prost Alehouse in Pflgerville. I’m pleased to share new poetry from the summer release of the CyberWit 2024 Janet Kuypers poetry book “The Universe is in Your Hands”.

Charlie Newman may have said this was the best feature I had performed (when I performed the impromptu feature for the story “Crazy” on 10/20/09 at The Café in Chicago), but back in the day I didn’t have multiple screens for live broadcast, and I didn’t stream it live in Facebook. Thank you to everyone who made this feature possible, for I’m glad to share this live video (shared 1 year ago today in a post 7 years ago today). Maybe I *do* sometimes go over the top in my performances, but I hope it’s worth it.

I have waited since 2017 for a total solar eclipse in the sky where I was living, and when it came in 2024 it was on a cloudy day. I thanked people in a post 2 years ago today of a video from a poetry reading in front of The Café, and I have been sharing past posts because The Café was shut down and the building was literally torn down — but I should be thanking all of the people who attended the Café open mic back in the day... some who also hosts open mics and features in Chicago now. The additional thing I find funny about this memory from 11 years ago today is that it never actually lists “Sb” for Sauvignon Blanc, and btw, “Sb” is literally Periodic Table element #51, Antimony. Walking Seed Brewing and its NXMW wine division *made* an “Antimony” wine *with* the Element icon under a block of ice John once pulled form the Southern Ocean.

Yesterday and today I saw birds flying toward my Pergola and bringing twigs to one corner, which makes me think that birds might be building another bird’s nest near our grapevines on our back porch. This morning I saw a chipmunk jumping on to the Pergola counter trying to figure out a way to get to the top before he gave up.

While going for a walk today, I collected recyclable trash to bring home to recycle — and when I went to get broken Styrofoam for taking to the Austin city recycling center, I fell head-first into the loose-gravel blacktop. Cuts on my hands and leg, one bleeder on my chin, a swollen wrist, and a bruised knee. I think this proves no good deed goes unpunished.

As the eclipse was approaching the totality, it was getting cloudy... So I changed the batteries on my camera before totality came. When I did my viewfinder would not work at all with my filter, so I took off my filter, and since it was cloudy I could photograph the eclipse through the clouds (something I didn’t do in 2017).

For months we have used a container w/ 3 receptacles for trash, dry compost, & wet compost next to our kitchen island. Because it was so short, for months it has been on top of 4 white styrofoam shipping containers (lovely), so this past week I pushed for using our old & warped wood sitting in the garage to make a box to hold up this container... John just finished nailing all the pieces together, so after the eclipse, I started to stain it...

The main branch of my Jay’s potato chip bag of growing potatoes fell over from its own weight, so I had to move my potato chip “farm” so that it could lean against the window, so the plant would look like it was still growing tall to the sun. You don’t know how happy a place like this makes me. It is so nice to be able to go up to a buffet line and be able to eat absolutely anything because I don’t have to worry whether anything has meat in it here. This is my second plate, which has fried rice and sushi and only 3 kinds of tofu; on my first plate had a spring roll, extra eggplant, and a sesame seed ball. Man, so many choices and so little time...

Ah, social distancing... at least I was able to get my favorite beer to go 4 years ago today at Circle Brewing Company (which I honor my favorite brewery — even without air conditioning — here by re-posting this). I have one can of their Doppel Blur left, which I will have to drink soon before it goes bad (I just keep wanting to keep it in my fridge though, like it’s still there for me as a gentle reminder when I want the best Doppel Blur).

I am not a farmer (trust me). But by spending no money I am growing potatoes out of my Jay’s potato chip bag. I love seeing this in my office, and we just noticed that there is literally a potato sprouting up out of the dirt (which means there are probably more in the dirt below). I know I love plants, and I know to wait until the leaves turn brown before I “harvest” my potatoes, but really this is the most hysterical “farming’ I have ever done.

I talked about this shirt being a one-time-wearing in this post from 5 years ago today, but since John’s Walking Seed Brewing isn’t technically supposed to be producing wine, he said this “NXMW” logo and design could be the wine division of Walking Seed Brewing — so since then, every time we’ve made wine (or even beer, since I don’t have a shirt for Walking Seed Brewing) I wear this shirt (which is why I shared this 1 year ago today too).

It is humbling to see this post from 3 years ago today, for when I was first offered by Cyberwit.net to have a book published — and Facebook poet friends helped determine the title for my first book with them, “Eternal Never Ending Now”. Since then I have released two additional books through them, “Shattering the Glass Ceiling” and “Testament” (both on women’s issues and released in 2022 and 2023 during Women’s History Month). I am looking forward to finalizing my NEXT book with them (thank you again for this opportunity, as I look forward to working with Karunesh Kumar Agarwal and Cyberwit.net again) of a book about understanding the world and the universe with a 2024 book (potentially) titled “The Universe is in your Hands”. I have been working on poetry reflective of cultures and locations around the globe, with a nod to environmental changes on planet Earth, for a summer book release.

We just went to a brewer meeting for Round Rock last night. They talked about contest beer-making with flowers (which I don’t think John will attempt because he hasn’t made a new batch since the Bananas Foster Ave. beer is on tap here now). I share this post from 4 years ago today not because of the brewing but because here you can see our UN-renovated bathroom downstairs. It is such a nice space to see now when we pass that tiniest of bathrooms downstairs.

I went for a walk before, and I saw a gold cat run across the street away from me. So I stopped and spoke gently, hoping it might calm the cat, but it eventually went into the sewer across the street. I turned to continue walking and *another* gold cat was right at my feet, so I said hello, and they came right up to me and I started petting this cat. I felt bad that I didn’t bring my container of dry cat food for this cat, and I could only give them love...

I am super-excited that the total solar eclipse is passing over the United States on April 8, 2024. Since I took photos of the 2017 total solar eclipse (and knew it was passing through Austin in 2024) I designed this music-themed Austin 2024 eclipse t-shirt. It is cool to see this friendship “reminder“, though I’m sure that due to FB account changes we’ve been FB friends longer — and we’ve been “actual” friends even longer than that. It’s a shame I’m no longer around and we are not close enough to visit anymore (though if it means anything, I have 1 painting you gave me in my library now, and John still has the electric bass he bought because we played music with you guys while he was in town for his job once). I know you do a lot of painting, and I don’t have FTP access to artvilla anymore (expired passwords probably), so I don’t have access to more of your paintings to potentially add to more issues/books of cc&d magazine (sniff)...

I swear it wasn’t my intention to share repeated musical memories today... But last night John and I were talking about Lou Reed songs and Leonard Cohen songs, and today I saw a post from 3 years ago today (about a post from 6 years ago today but the links were lost, but I also shared 1 year ago today) from when we performed “Coming Back to You” at B. B. Rover’s in Austin —a bar that’s now closed, but had the 101-club for people who had 100 different beers there, which John did, and got a t-shirt for it on his birthday, which he happened to wear last night — when we were taking about this song that we covered together.

John and I haven’t been looking for music shows, but it’s cool to see this memory from 6 years ago today of our paid 2-hour music show at Craft & Racked Wine Bar in Round Rock, TX. One thing John noticed when listening to acoustic sets at breweries recently is that they seem to play all of the songs with the same chord progression, so everything sounds the same. I asked him if we did that when we did shows, and he said he liked that we used a variety of styles and tempos throughout shows so listeners don’t get bored throughout a show. (I also like that at this show we did the whole show with no breaks either, which I hope people appreciated...) The last song we did in this show was “American Pie” (a song that I’ll never cover again), but I remember the owner even stepped outside to listen to that song at the end of our show, so I think it was a good farewell.

I previously had the Ukraine flag on my Facebook profile photo in support of their fight against Russia. After 2 years (and Republicans considering not giving Ukraine aid any longer and allowing Russia to squash another country), I had to add this flag again to my profile photo. To NOT support Ukraine is ludicrous — if we do not want the spread of this evil, we *could* wait until we spend *more* money and add human lives, or we could stop this now by helping Ukraine (which right now would cost less and takes less time and does not cost American lives).

She was dressed to go to the monthly Carboys homebrewers meeting, but The Dig was closed. Janet even saved a banana from our Dallas trip to introduce my new beer. so she had to try the banana in the Bananas Foster Avenue beer. However, trying to eat the banana after soaking in beer was a complete nightmare. The hops made the banana taste like perfume.

When visiting my Chicago home town I bought Jay’s potato chips, and when I finished the bag sentimental Janet didn’t really want to throw away the potato chip bag. Since I had roots growing from eyes and a potato in my kitchen, I thought on a whim I would plant the potato seeds and see how beautiful it would be to grow potatoes out of my potato chip bag. I didn’t think it would actually work but I was stunned when I happened to look in my Jay’s potato chip bag and see a potato plant growing.

I shared this post 8 years ago today from a post from 11 years ago today, because since I had all these glass ornaments (and a few retro blue ornaments too), I thought having a silver tree would be kitsch for a year or two — and it *was* cool, at least in photographs. It looks really excellent to see this tree looking back, but I think it was surprisingly smaller than I expected, so... it was fun while it lasted, which I think was only for a year.

Just saw a rerun of Star Trek: TNG this morning where a lone Borg was rescued on the starship Enterprise, and the crew was explaining to 1 Borg how no human than think of themselves as one of a group (3rd of 5, 7 of 9), and that no one in the Borg could think of themselves as “I”. And I thought, “Hmmm, that sounds like the Ayn Rand book “Anthem”, teaching people to think for themselves for once...” I didn’t realize how objectivist Star Trek could be. (Oh, btw, Happy Birthday to Ayn Rand today.)

Last night I watched the Illini basketball game on the Big Ten Network, but I was thrilled to try the new beer — and new tap handle — for “Bananas Foster Ave.” beer, and John, congratulations on seeing your idea to fruition — it is a really good beer. Yes, Christmas lights will be down this weekend (we had to wait because I was hosting my “Poetic License” open mic last weekend, so lights had to wait), but we noticed this week that the lights on our Charlie Brown tree in the front of our yard weren’t working — we realized that someone actually CUT the lights IN TWO PLACES to destroy them (I mean, someone made an active effort to use some sort of blade to actually destroy lights on private property). When John wanted to make a Bananas Foster beer, I begged him to call it Bananas Foster Ave. (since Chicago’s Foster Ave. was the exist for my 1st Chicago home off LSD, and the exit we took to host “the Café” poetry open mic). I even photographed street signs around Fost Ave. so I could get the BANANAS to look right on the beer label, and seeing it on our sample bottle looked so amazing that when John kegged it this week, he ordered a beer bottle-shaped tap handle for this beer. Because he is late in printing labels for his Wold Creek Cabernet Sauvignon I am so excited to see the label on our custom tap handle for Bananas Foster Ave. beer.

Back in the day, when I moved “The Café” open mic from Lincoln Avenue to The Gallery Cabaret and titled it “The Café Gallery”, I literally put up little pieces of paper throughout the bar to advertise the open mic. This post from literally 12 years ago today is serendipity, because I *kept* a few of those papers, and they are currently on the table inside our library right now. (And even though this paper lists a URL that no longer exists for the open mic, I made sure to move all the past feature links to http://scars.tv/thecafe/ so that not only group photos and open mics can be found, but even videos from the more recent “The Café Gallery” book reading series too...)
