He was a true vanguard in the culinary world, and an Ayn Rand fan who quit his work to get his masters in philosophy. He will be greatly missed.

Okay, so John tells me that Walter Payton died 14 years about (1999) in the beginning of November, and the following weekend the Bears were underdogs n playing the Packers, but because an end-of-game Packers 27 year field goal kick was blocked, the Chicago Bears won back then. So, I got the photo of my dad and Sweetness into my iPod, and was getting all psycho with tradition, hoping the Bears (as underdogs, in the sportscasters prediction lineup before Mike Ditka was the only guy who called the Bears winning at Lambeau Field) could pull it off. Everyone at Mickey Finn’s Brewery last night was saying I should keep it up since we were in the lead, and I am SO thrilled we puled it off!!!

This is an EARLY warning: I really hope everyone comes out on Wednesday October 9th from 7-9pm at the Café Gallery at Gallery Cabaret in Chicago (2020 N. Oakley Ave, right by Armitage and Western and at the Blue line “L” stop, with tons of free parking) for the Café Gallery poetry open mic and the Bill Yarrow feature!
Now, this is going to be a different kind of reading (check out his comments in the events listing for full details), but the open mic will be limited to ONE POEM PER PERSON (my intro will have to be short, too), because Bill has asked people to meet with him about picking one poem of his from two sides to read, and in return Bill will read one poem from every person reading. So, a lot of people are coming with a (on average 20 lines or fewer) poem reading from Bill, while he reads poem from different authors too... This should be a really cool evening, soI REALLY look forward to seeing everyone there Wednesday!

Halloween gig with the Poets went well. Dressed as Cousin Bones seemed appropriate. Did some new ones and some old favorites. Thoughts of Lou Reed still fresh. Host Janet Kuypers did some tribute songs. I stuck around for songwriters night with Jamie of Strobe Recording and played Lou’s “Heroin” in standard tuning which I haven’t done in about six years, but went well. Thanks to everyone who hung out.

We mourn the passing of Lou Reed this week. Since my old acoustic alternative band Mom’s Favorite Vase (with Brian Hosey on guitar) covered 3 The Velvet Underground songs, John and I plan to start the open mic tonight at 7pm for “the Café Gallery” at The the Café Gallery at Gallery Cabaret with 3 Lou Reed songs, “Pale Blue Eyes”, There She Goes Again” and “Femme Fatale ”, before covering the Lou Reed song I’ve heard on Trainspotting (as well as sung on a PS4 commercial) of “Perfect Day.” I figured if Wes Heine will have most of his band for the Cousin Bones feature tonight, it makes perfect sense to start the evening with music... So I really look forward to seeing everyone tonight at the open mic! (Because he was married to performance artist Laurie Anderson, I may cover a song from Laurie Anderson’s most recent Album Homeland, which I really think she wrote about him, My Compensation...)

I chose to give $ to ATLAS SHRUGGED Movie Who is John Galt? so I could say I am a part of it...
I know that people may think it’s strange that the movie was asking for money (shouldn’t they come up with the fund without asking or handouts?), but I think a lot of people who are fans of Ayn wanted to give SOMETHING to the movie, so they could say they actually had any sort of part (no matter how minuscule) in contributing to the production of the movie. (And yes, I took a picture of me with not only the hard copy and the much older 2 volume hard copy of the book, but a paperback - and also two paperbacks that list a dedication to not only Frank but also Nathaniel Branden, the audio cassette edition, and the DVD of part 1 - oh, and the Ayn Rand stamp (that I used on all my wedding invites, by the way), while I am wearing the Atlas Shrugged pin, and I am even shrugging.)

Enjoyed hearing about the cosmic microwave background that first generated the WMAP (but later in greater detail with the Planck), and how although the amount of mass (AKA energy) does not change in this expanding Universe, the amount of Dark Energy DOES increase with the amount of space (and since the Universe is expanding, our mass/energy becomes a smaller and smaller portion of this Universe...) at Layne Jackson’s Art Shop. Was good for once to go hear about cosmology when going out in Chicago.

To respond to everyone, (A) Cathleen, you are so sweet, I had walked 4.7 miles in 90+ degree heat to get there for the half-price pitchers of Gudenteit beer on Mondays, but thanks for the compliment - John brought the change of clothes so I wouldn’t have to be wearing the sweaty tank top all night... (B) It is the beginning of the season and the Bears weren’t playing (they plated the day before). I’m pretty positive they wouldn’t keep tennis on if the Bears were playing... And (C) You’re right, I was cheering more for Nadal, now that he is bandage-free and is playing really WELL on hard courts too. But the match that won (in my opinion) in this series was Wawrinka losing in 5 sets to Djokovic, that was an AMAZING match.

Okay, the bonus week for this poem mic the week before this event was fun, and (in honor of David Rubin at this open mic occasionally having people come up with 5 words to try to write into a new poem) at the end of the night we came up with 5 words for everyone to try to write into a new poem...
So for anyone interested, people came up with the words “blurry”, “slithering”, “intestinal worm” (and you can use those two words separately if you prefer), “highway” and “saloon”. SO, if you can use these words in a poem, share them with everyone 9/11 the Café Gallery poetry open mic before the Dalice Malice feature!

I am honored to be highlighted at Poetry Saloon at Noon this month, and I am excited not only with the interview (and visual display that will simultaneously run of images and video stills from my past shows as well as select photography of mine from around the world), but I am also thrilled to read three brand-new never before performed Periodic Table poems (and I will read them with music from the HA!Man of South Africa’s 2011 “Hotel Music” with “on the lose” as well)...

It was fifteen years ago today that I was stopped at an intersection driving to my parent’s house when someone hit my car into traffic for another car to hit me, before I was rushed to the hospital. From what I vaguely remember from what people told me long ago, I think the accident happened at about 12:30 in the afternoon.
Hmmm.
Because I was in a coma for 11 days, maybe I’ll lay down in the sun for 11 minutes today starting at ~12:30.
I mean, it’s not like I can forget, so what else can I do.

Actually, the shirt is from the story I intended to make my second novel (which I never finished), though the first two parts (the Omega and the Delta, as they were later called) were completed and printed in the November and December 2013 issues of Down in the Dirt magazine. The Scars logo (with the Scars typeface) usually appears on the back cover of books with a man holding a weight set over a globe (with the web listing for scars), but for the book Erasable Bond, we put a small version of me and my husband on our wedding day dancing at a trellis over the globe (it almost even looks like a cake topper!) instead of the man-with-weights icon (which is kind of nifty, and I’m sure won’t be done again, but it is cool with a book title like Erasable Bond, and a background image of Adam and Eve being kicked out of paradise...)

John just left for the road trip for the Indy 500 (again) - I went in 2010 with him and Frank with record heat, but 2013 should be a cold day. I know they’re right out on the track though, so it may still get warm... (I remember - other than the heat - in 2010 was that Jack Nicholson was there waving the flag for the event, and we high-fived as he left in his golf cart after the race. That, and I read What we Need in Life on the racetrack. since the first lines of the song are “I don’t know where this road is taking me anymore...”)

Just heard on the news that a New York public school district (the 1st one) is adopting an ALL vegetarian diet for the kids. The children scarf down tofu wraps and veggies at school now, and people there said that Americans get on average 2 to 3 times more protein in their diet than they need, and protein from plants is better for human consumption.

Wow... Listening to my iPod today when walking for ~1 hour, I heard my Mom’s Favorite Vase cover of Verse Chorus Verse (some Nirvana fans know it as Sappy), and after ALL THESE years, I JUST noticed that in the first rain stick beat in the song (about 49 seconds in), I can HEAR Warren talk about how it sounds as we’re playing it. I know this decision-making is last-minute, but because John saw a WTTW show this past week or so about all of the things at the Lake Shore and Lincoln Park (nature stuff beyond the Lincoln Park Zoo), I am going to somewhere along the Nature Boardwalk, or maybe anywhere near the wetlands areas. And I’ll come up with nature=related (meaning not man-made) Periodic Table poems for this reading (like I did last year near "L" train stops at the 2012 Poetry Bomb...).

Now, I look out my window and see no water over-running on the streets; we live on a crest and have no flooding... But I just heard a man from Libertyville (3 miles south of me) on CLTV news say that Grand Ave. (rte 132, that’s north of me) is flooded, a golf course in Libertyville is flooded, so maybe I SHOULD worry about driving out of here (even though it looks fine out my window here)...

Thank you so much! I know John said I lost tone in my voice because I had to speak so loud, but 2 people came to me afterwards saying they were glad they could hear me - with all the noise in the halls, you really had to PROJECT yourself to be heard, right?
Oh, I have been vegetarian since 1995, and since I lived in Logan Square all my time in Chicago, I was really pleased that Chicago Diner opened another restaurant in Logan Square, so we had to go there...

I keep seeing a U-Verse TV ad where one girls says to another that they can put a tv anywhere, even in the closet... Then show them having the TV on in a closet while they parade around in clothes like a fashion show in their closet. And all I think is that me and my friend Sheri just played house in the backs of my 2 closets (that were joined in the back), and managed to play in the closet without needing a television there to tell us how to play.

Happy Birthday to my darling, John Yotko!!! Trust me, you don’t age. If you want proof: this morning the waitress at breakfast wished you a happy birthday and asked how old you were. When you said your age, she was stunned and didn’t believe it, so you then told her a number less than two thirds your age, and she then said THAT was more believable. Seriously, I think you’re going to start looking younger and younger (which is good for me, I’ll look like a cougar with such a young guy on my arm)... So Happy Birthday!

Just saw a rerun of the Simpsons, and found out that May 10th is “Whacking Day” (where everyone runs around whacking snakes with sticks). That also happens to be the day of my next feature with David Buddha-Hargarten at Poetry Love Letters (sometimes with James Gordon or Poetry AuthorKottyn Campbell). So instead of hitting snakes with sticks May 10th, celebrate Whacking Day at our feature 5/10/13 7:00pm (5306 N Damen at “Let Them Eat Chocolate”) of “Science vs. Mysticism”!

It’s March, and I can finally say welcome to winter with recent snowfalls... Since there have been so many months of light snow, the weather gods decided to dump the most snow in my town (north of Chicago - you guys in the Windy City didn’t have it so bad), but still, we’re low of snowfall for the season. And if they say “in like a lion, out like a lamb,” I really hope that means winter will end in March (since spring technically starts right around my husband John Yotkoo’s birthday this month), and the weather will turn nice soon!

I LOVE the science references (thanks so much to Wes for noting this!)... I even wrote a poem correlating the nothingness of a person in a relationship with how atom are mostly emptiness (Now You’re Nothing To Me), and I don’t know how many astronomy shows I’ve seen that talk about how we are made of stardust, blah blah blah. I am thinking (since I am writing poems about elements in the Periodic Table and doing a feature of it at Poetry Love Letters 5/10/11 with Buddha 309) of doing another carbon poem because two strands of the parts of DNA we know are found in meteors (like the one over Russia, or the one that crossed the iridium constellation of communication satellites, this past month)...

Just picked up an airsoft Beretta M9 replica for some low cost shooting practice. Printed up some half scale IDPA targets and started making holes in the paper. Janet Kuypers gave it a try and was doing pretty good putting a lot of BBs in the 0 ring.

So apparently they (A) got no one that could replace us after we quit last fall, and (B) maybe they could not make enough money at that location to justify keeping Olan Mills open there.

So, since I previously got 2nd degree burns in January on my hand and it was damaged for a few weeks, and John Yotko had a hand injury from his handgun and his hand was injured for a week or two, we NEVER took down our Christmas trees. (Then again, with less than an inch of snow on the ground until the first week in February, it hasn’t FELT like Christmas yet...) Both of or hands have healed, so hopefully the trees will come down this weekend...

cc&d magazine and Down in the Dirt magazines (both published through Scars Publications) are going to run for the remainder of 2013 as BI-monthly issues (yes, they will be released every OTHER month, instead of every month...). Will be re-working already accepted writing for future issues, and will let all future contributors know which issue their accepted writing appear in in 2013... But I have started to convert the accepted materials into the March-April issue of cc&d, and it looks GREAT, CRAMMED with a TON of cool writings!!!!
As I am trying to set up future issues of cc&d, I don’t want to double-up repeated writers in issues, and the 20 year anniversary issue is the May-June 2013 issue, so I might leave it with space for more writings if anyone has any good ideas and additions for this huge issue for cc&d...

Saw the CBS TV show characters say thank you to everyone in a Superbowl ad for making CBS the “Most Watched Channel”, and one of the stars, while saying thank you, made the sign language gesture for “thank you,” and I thought that was a very nice gesture. So, the place that collects our recyclables on trash day now, has a system where you’re supposed to notify them via the Internet THAT you recycled (it doesn’t matter if you DID or not, just tell them on the web that you did), and you earn points. And all I’m thinking is, do these points give people an incentive to recycle, to GET things from the points you “earned”? I didn’t think that was the point. (Kind of like believing in a religion because you want to think you’re not really dead when you die) I mean, in the summers I pick up recyclables off the street when I’m out walking, because that’s what you SHOULD do if you care about recycling (and also care about not having other people’s trash out on the streets).

I am so sad... My marine husband John Yotko took a photo of me in a legal area holding his legally owned AR-15, and it was pulled because it may incite violence.
Really, like I’m violent. I’m only depressing, if you deal with me too much. But not violent. I mean, come on, I’m a vegetarian!

 And I made a point a while ago in editorials for cc&d magazine (posted online) about the NSA reading anything where people mention the President (so why not, I like to know the FBI, or whomever, has me on record somewhere for mentioning anything)
I mean, I made a point to get “Mein Kampf” and a “how to make a bomb” books out of the Library because I hear the government keeps tabs on what people check out, because they may become terrorist threats.

Killed at Let Them Eat Chocolate, Hit Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind with G.P.A. (Greatest Poet Alive) Livingston, Tracie A. It was a riot to see this sign in Florida (not Pennsylvania) of a Bear Crossing sign with bullet holes in the sign. (I had to stop to take this photo though).
So after we get our food, she hears a woman at the counter say she’s a vegetarian, so Janet had to go up to her to tell her the bean burritos are very good, and if they sell meat & potato burritos, she can add potato oles to her burrito and it’s great. (She then heard the woman say to the guy that she heard the potato oles were good)

We took this photo this morning because we watched “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” last night (while I wore the shirt Sandy gave me that says “Then he got an idea! He got an awful idea! The Grinch got a wonderful, awful idea!”), and Cindy Lou Who took a wreath at one point in the story and held it up, framing her head...

So John and I are sitting in his mom and dad’s kitchen and he has this song going through his head, and can’t remember what song it is. Then he says that it is “Stigmata”, and I know that Chicago Industrial song, and his mom (the once church choir singer) says, who is that by? I looked at John, then her, and say it is by Ministry. So then his mom asks, “Do they sing it in English or Latin?” (At this point I think John was doing everything in ho power to stop himself from laughing hysterically.) I just responded, “English, we just can’t remember the words.” (Of course I can remember the words, I thought it wouldn’t be proper to quote any of them at that point, or mention that this is the first track of their album “the Land of Rape and Honey”...)

This morning I just realized that the huge candy cane themed nutcracker I just bought looked gorgeous right next to our Christmas tree this year (I usually keep the nutcrackers separate and displayed together, but this one’s next to the tree, and there are two nutcrackers UNDER the tree now too, near the toy trucks my dad made years ago).

Am thrilled the book of mine (based on poetry performed on an iTunes CD release with Francois Le Roux / the HA!Man of South Africa, plus live show recordings) was just released today - “Burn Through Me”... The background behind the image of me on the cover with sparklers covering my face is actually from an interactive art piece he made in a past Chicago show!
And sometimes you get the best title ideas from people who submit poetry to S c a r s P u b l i c a t i o n s ... Because that is why we HAD to title the 2013 poetry collection book poet as sociopath (it really seemed the perfect title for us poets). We hope everyone enjoys the 2013 collection books out in time for Thanksgiving!
But for the annual S c a r s P u b l i c a t i o n s short prose collection book for 2013, fewer words means more stories in the collection book bare minimum (with barely there type on a beach scene with a small empty table).

I’m really looking forward to being at the 2013 Chicago Book Expo this Sunday 11/24 to show off Scars Publications books at Ida Jablanovec’s exhibitor table for “Saloon Poetry: the New Generation” near the front doors of the Expo! I can’t be there the entire time, but I’m sure I’ll be there when they open - and probably when they close, so come to the 2013 Chicago Book Expo from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at St. Augustine’s Hall (1345 West Argyle, Chicago). I hope to read different poems from the many Scars Publications books I’m bringing with me, and I’ll have a bunch of Scars books on sale there too - at a deep discount ($3 each, or 2/$5)!

I am super-stoked that I’ll have the chance to show off Scars Publications books at the 2013 Chicago Book Expo this Sunday 11//24 at Ida Jablanovec’s table for “Saloon Poetry: the New Generation”! The 2013 Chicago Book Expo is from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, and it is held in Uptown at St. Augustine’s Hall (which is in the middle of the West building, on the campus of St. Augustine College, 1345 West Argyle, Chicago). I am not sure how long and in which parts of the day I will be there, but I’ll possibly read a different poems from the many Scars Publications books I’m bringing with me. I may also have a bunch of Scars books on sale there too - at a deep discount ($3 each, or 2/$5)! Just finalized the 2014 literary date book from Scars Publications, “don’t forget it” - so people can order this spiral-bound weekly planner with a poem for each calendar week of 2014! (This calendar even has the last 10 days for 2013 and first 10 days of 2015, so people can keep holiday events organized too...) This is a great way to keep events in your like in order - and even get a poem every week of the year! Poems chosen in this collection book were from 2013 issues of cc&d magazine and Down in the Dirt magazine, and all of the poems in this date book will also be included in the 2013 annual Scars Publications poetry collection book, that will tentatively be released before Thanksgiving!

Actually, I see photos of him now, so I had to look through my old portfolio for magazines I designed, to find a photo when I knew him (back in 1997).
At my old job where we ran trade shows, I worked there as the photographer, and I was reading (in my spare time before he trade show opened) the Ayn Rand novel "Capitalism: the Unknown Ideal", and Charlie Trotter (who was speaking there) started talking to me since he too is (was) an Ayn Rand fan
We talked for a while, and I even went to his restaurant (Wine Spectator magazine even called Trotter’s the best restaurant in the nation) before he closed it to get his masters in Philosophy.
