With empty seats next to us, the 2 white women behind them put their feet on the empty seas. Then an Indian couple asked if the seats were taken,& amp; the women sad they were saving the seats for friends. Later a white couple of strangers sat down and the women said nothing.

Having breakfast on our way to the finals. Interesting note: Cafe 290 first opened in the post WWII era. The restaurant is an old Army barracks used during the war in Camp Swift. It was moved to where it is now and was converted to a restaurant during the highway construction initiative under President Dwight D Eisenhower.

For lunch before tennis, Janet wanted to stop by a vegetarian Indian restaurant. The food is delicious and fiery.

Janet Kuypers I only saw this place (when their sign said they make crepes, because Americans don’t know what dosas are, and btw, we’re the only non-Indians here) because we passed it on our way to the hotel, which was right to gentleman’s clubs and a place called "Centerfolds". This hotel was 5 miles from the country club sponsoring the only clay court tennis event in the States. 20160409

It breaks my heart that last year this weekend (4/8/15) I was writing about how I had not updated the web page for performances of mine with music from the HA!Man of South Africa in a while... So last year I updated Chicago to South Africa with new listings - but the thing is, I USED to have access to a server that allowed for storing mp3 files (which was most of the tracks available on the page), so since the move to Texas (because it was before then I lost that mp3 server) I have been too afraid to look at and eliminate most of what WAS mp3 linked on the site. SO, I saw this post from one year ago this weekend, and I thought, oh, I should clean that page up... So I did it today, and because I added so many video performances of Periodic Table of Poetry poems (that were videos and not mp3s), and because many have iTunes tracks, the newly-revised Chicago to South Africa page now has no bad links, and it still surprisingly long with content! I know last fall was the last time I actually SAW the HA!Man of South Africa, but I’m hoping he may make the trip to Austin (I mean, he is one for music, and they DO have quite a music scene here)... But since I’m new here, I don’t know if I’d be able to GET him a show in the city.

That was the cool thing about being in Chicago (like two years ago today, when we took the day to go from one place to the next to try different places), that you COULD do that in Chicago. I haven’t really found that in Austin, unless you go to the 2 streets downtown (that are touristy and overpriced, and no, I don’t consider food trucks, which are businesses that don’t want to pay for restaurant space, I don’t consider a food truck isn’t going places, sorry).

Since we were in the neighborhood two years ago today for my audition, we stopped at Native Foods Café because they had the best vegan meatball sandwich I had ever tasted (the sauce was phenomenal). I think most of those restaurants stopped carrying that sub, which was the BEST thing they had (and the only real reason why I’d spend the money for their food).

Wow, John took this photo of us two years ago today at one of our last chances to be at the old Mickey Finn’s before they moved - and you can see from that photo that they had a row of albums framed along their wall, which was our impetus to do that with a CD display in our music room area at our old house (we may eventually reinstate that in the music room of our house here; we may still have the wood frames from that CD display).

I’m sorry, I just like the close-up photo of the cow (and going for a walk by my apartments this past month I saw like 20some cows grazing right by where people were driving to work! Crazy! ... OH, and in Texas they call them “longhorns” and they have longhorn logos everywhere, but (A) I’m a northerner and we called them cows, and (B) when they are grazing a farmland and don’t have horns, why call them longhorns? They’re cows!). Okay, for those of you who didn’t make it to Poetry Plus in Georgetown last Friday, Thom gave blank carts to a few of us at the open mic, and I got the impression that we were supposed to write a poem inside the card. So I looked at the image on the cover and came up with this poem, and read it i the second round of reading that night. This is the actual poem.

Quieted Soul 3/25/16

Drop you in a strange house
                in a strange land.
Have a seat, they say relax, enjoy.
                But you feel so tense,
you don’t know which way to turn
                and the house is hollow
because only your soul will make it
                a home. So the Sun
beats down, and you’re at a loss,
                not knowing what to do.
So you slowly sit down, catch
                patches of grass
in your peripheral vision, wonder
                what steps you can take
so you can build a ladder to the sky
                & turn down that damn
Sun, ‘cause with the sun so strong
                on this foreign soil
it scorches the streets and strips
                the life from our souls.
So sit here stoically as the Sun stares
                at this strange home,
search for ways to quench that
                quieted soul once more.

Two years ago today I was posting on Twitter about the Sony Open from the night before, but the day before TODAY I was catching the Miami Open, and Nadal having to retire from a match (he WAS beating the opponent ranked 90-something, before he felt bad, even though doctors found nothing wrong with him). Yesterday was the first time since the 2010 Australian Open that he actually retired from a match. (Mind... Blown.)

It looks like three years today when I released video of a compilation of ALL of the pieces performed in the 6/11/02 show 6/11 at Café Aloha in Chicago. (That was the first show I had in Chicago, thanks to David Rubin, after I recovered from my near fatal accident, and that was the first show I ever did with a projector displaying artwork while I read poetry. In this show I incorporated my love of astronomy with NASA Project and the second poem I had ever written, Moonlight, then I read my poem (that I read parts of in my wedding) Looking for a Worthy Adversary I- I don’t go into everything I red, but there was a ton of material in this show, where I started my multimedia performances...

Oh my gosh, I forgot that John dragged Janet Kuypers to Jim Beam Distillery for a tour and a few grip ‘n grins one year ago today before leaving town. (I can’t remember doing this mush stuff for my birthday...)

Well well well, it seems that ever after John’s birthday one year go today he had to drag Janet Kuypers to see Four Roses Bourbon before driving home.

Wow, two years ago today I just found out about the Poem-A-Thon to fight bullying (thanks for spreading the word Esteban), and for it I posted my poem “Walking home from School”, which I think I will do again right here...

walking home from school

once when I was little

I was walking home from school
filled with fear, like I always was

the other kids made fun of me
they called me names
sometimes they threw rocks at me
once they pushed me to the ground
went home, bleeding knees and tears

but once, I’ll never forget, Patti
from 121st street was
walking behind me and threw
her gym shoes at me

they landed right next to me
as I was walking down
that first big hill

I don’t know if I stopped
but I remember for a brief moment
looking up at the tall tree branches
next to the road

all the entangled dead branches

and I thought
that all I had to do
was pick up her shoes
and throw them

as hard as I could

and she would never
get her shoes back

I looked at the trees
for only a moment
and I continued walking
as fast as I could
as I always did
and suddenly the shoes
were long behind me

and the others were laughing

I look back now
and wonder why I didn’t
do it

was I scared of them
was I scared of myself

I still keep asking myself that

The Illini might not have won that game 3 years ago, but John enjoyed singing hymns telling St. Bernardus to pray for us whenever we went to the Beer Garden.

This was hysterical, when John wanted to photograph that voodoo works three years ago when beer magically appeared in my glass at the Beer Garden...

I tried to work my voodoo spell for the Illini three years ago today, but Miami was in the lead over us.

Wow, I remember when John made that Chief Illiniwek pendant so I could put it matching gold and blue beads to wear. I got to wear it when we went out to watch a gme three years ago today, and I still have that necklace hanging with my jewelry right now. (I should remember to wear it when we go out on Saturdays and a game is on, because people in Texas seem to love college sport so much...)

Okay fine, John thought the tiny glass was cute to take a picture one year ago today, but I had to include this because we went to the Bluegrass Tavern, which is pretty much the only kind of music we hear when we go to open mics in Austin. That, and this reminds me that I wore the USMC shirt I designed for his birthday, and I wore his Marines cap (with this discharge pin on it)... I know John wanted barbecue tonight for his birthday, but I wonder if I should wear my Marines clothes for him today...

I have no idea why we took this photo one year ago today for his birthday (was HE being artsy?, or did he want to snap a photo at The Old Talbott Tavern, which is the oldest bourbon bar in the states?).

I know John is holding bottles of Maker’s Mark with his name on it, but I think the only reason he said “I made this” with this photo one year ago today was to make commentary on the ending credits of every X Files episode. (and by the way, holy cow how red does my hair look when back-lit by the sun...)

And yeah, John was saying I had to go and be artsy with the set of posts one year ago today at Maker’s Mark. but one of the shots he posted was a picture of us we took to add to our 2015 Christmas Card...

And yeah, one year ago today John got to dip his whiskey bottles with his name on them in the wax at Maker’s Mark. How cool was THAT?

Oh, John thought I wouldn’t remind him of the HUGE celebration he had last year for is birthday...Sorry, but if there was a whiskey cask with your name on it, there will HAVE to be a bunch of posts are coming for this - and by the way, for this fist set of pictures, I mean, I don’t even like coffee... Oh, the things I do for you.)

Oh John, it’s so funny how two years ago when we went shooting together for your birthday, you had to take a picture of my losing my FOIDginity at the On Target Range. I mean, it’s not like I need a FOID card in Texas (but at least you got to see me use it, and it has my Illinois driver’s license photo on it)...
