With empty seats next to us, the 2 white women behind them put their feet on the empty seas. Then an Indian couple asked if the seats were taken,& amp; the women sad they were saving the seats for friends. Later a white couple of strangers sat down and the women said nothing.

Having breakfast on our way to the finals. Interesting note: Cafe 290 first opened in the post WWII era. The restaurant is an old Army barracks used during the war in Camp Swift. It was moved to where it is now and was converted to a restaurant during the highway construction initiative under President Dwight D Eisenhower.

For lunch before tennis, Janet wanted to stop by a vegetarian Indian restaurant. The food is delicious and fiery.

Janet Kuypers I only saw this place (when their sign said they make crepes, because Americans don’t know what dosas are, and btw, we’re the only non-Indians here) because we passed it on our way to the hotel, which was right to gentleman’s clubs and a place called "Centerfolds". This hotel was 5 miles from the country club sponsoring the only clay court tennis event in the States. 20160409

It breaks my heart that last year this weekend (4/8/15) I was writing about how I had not updated the web page for performances of mine with music from the HA!Man of South Africa in a while... So last year I updated Chicago to South Africa with new listings - but the thing is, I USED to have access to a server that allowed for storing mp3 files (which was most of the tracks available on the page), so since the move to Texas (because it was before then I lost that mp3 server) I have been too afraid to look at and eliminate most of what WAS mp3 linked on the site. SO, I saw this post from one year ago this weekend, and I thought, oh, I should clean that page up... So I did it today, and because I added so many video performances of Periodic Table of Poetry poems (that were videos and not mp3s), and because many have iTunes tracks, the newly-revised Chicago to South Africa page now has no bad links, and it still surprisingly long with content! I know last fall was the last time I actually SAW the HA!Man of South Africa, but I’m hoping he may make the trip to Austin (I mean, he is one for music, and they DO have quite a music scene here)... But since I’m new here, I don’t know if I’d be able to GET him a show in the city.

That was the cool thing about being in Chicago (like two years ago today, when we took the day to go from one place to the next to try different places), that you COULD do that in Chicago. I haven’t really found that in Austin, unless you go to the 2 streets downtown (that are touristy and overpriced, and no, I don’t consider food trucks, which are businesses that don’t want to pay for restaurant space, I don’t consider a food truck isn’t going places, sorry).

Since we were in the neighborhood two years ago today for my audition, we stopped at Native Foods Café because they had the best vegan meatball sandwich I had ever tasted (the sauce was phenomenal). I think most of those restaurants stopped carrying that sub, which was the BEST thing they had (and the only real reason why I’d spend the money for their food).

Wow, John took this photo of us two years ago today at one of our last chances to be at the old Mickey Finn’s before they moved - and you can see from that photo that they had a row of albums framed along their wall, which was our impetus to do that with a CD display in our music room area at our old house (we may eventually reinstate that in the music room of our house here; we may still have the wood frames from that CD display).

I’m sorry, I just like the close-up photo of the cow (and going for a walk by my apartments this past month I saw like 20some cows grazing right by where people were driving to work! Crazy! ... OH, and in Texas they call them “longhorns” and they have longhorn logos everywhere, but (A) I’m a northerner and we called them cows, and (B) when they are grazing a farmland and don’t have horns, why call them longhorns? They’re cows!). Okay, for those of you who didn’t make it to Poetry Plus in Georgetown last Friday, Thom gave blank carts to a few of us at the open mic, and I got the impression that we were supposed to write a poem inside the card. So I looked at the image on the cover and came up with this poem, and read it i the second round of reading that night. This is the actual poem.

Quieted Soul 3/25/16

Drop you in a strange house
                in a strange land.
Have a seat, they say relax, enjoy.
                But you feel so tense,
you don’t know which way to turn
                and the house is hollow
because only your soul will make it
                a home. So the Sun
beats down, and you’re at a loss,
                not knowing what to do.
So you slowly sit down, catch
                patches of grass
in your peripheral vision, wonder
                what steps you can take
so you can build a ladder to the sky
                & turn down that damn
Sun, ‘cause with the sun so strong
                on this foreign soil
it scorches the streets and strips
                the life from our souls.
So sit here stoically as the Sun stares
                at this strange home,
search for ways to quench that
                quieted soul once more.

Two years ago today I was posting on Twitter about the Sony Open from the night before, but the day before TODAY I was catching the Miami Open, and Nadal having to retire from a match (he WAS beating the opponent ranked 90-something, before he felt bad, even though doctors found nothing wrong with him). Yesterday was the first time since the 2010 Australian Open that he actually retired from a match. (Mind... Blown.)

It looks like three years today when I released video of a compilation of ALL of the pieces performed in the 6/11/02 show 6/11 at Café Aloha in Chicago. (That was the first show I had in Chicago, thanks to David Rubin, after I recovered from my near fatal accident, and that was the first show I ever did with a projector displaying artwork while I read poetry. In this show I incorporated my love of astronomy with NASA Project and the second poem I had ever written, Moonlight, then I read my poem (that I read parts of in my wedding) Looking for a Worthy Adversary I- I don’t go into everything I red, but there was a ton of material in this show, where I started my multimedia performances...

Oh my gosh, I forgot that John dragged Janet Kuypers to Jim Beam Distillery for a tour and a few grip ‘n grins one year ago today before leaving town. (I can’t remember doing this mush stuff for my birthday...)

Well well well, it seems that ever after John’s birthday one year go today he had to drag Janet Kuypers to see Four Roses Bourbon before driving home.

Wow, two years ago today I just found out about the Poem-A-Thon to fight bullying (thanks for spreading the word Esteban), and for it I posted my poem “Walking home from School”, which I think I will do again right here...

walking home from school

once when I was little

I was walking home from school
filled with fear, like I always was

the other kids made fun of me
they called me names
sometimes they threw rocks at me
once they pushed me to the ground
went home, bleeding knees and tears

but once, I’ll never forget, Patti
from 121st street was
walking behind me and threw
her gym shoes at me

they landed right next to me
as I was walking down
that first big hill

I don’t know if I stopped
but I remember for a brief moment
looking up at the tall tree branches
next to the road

all the entangled dead branches

and I thought
that all I had to do
was pick up her shoes
and throw them

as hard as I could

and she would never
get her shoes back

I looked at the trees
for only a moment
and I continued walking
as fast as I could
as I always did
and suddenly the shoes
were long behind me

and the others were laughing

I look back now
and wonder why I didn’t
do it

was I scared of them
was I scared of myself

I still keep asking myself that

The Illini might not have won that game 3 years ago, but John enjoyed singing hymns telling St. Bernardus to pray for us whenever we went to the Beer Garden.

This was hysterical, when John wanted to photograph that voodoo works three years ago when beer magically appeared in my glass at the Beer Garden...

I tried to work my voodoo spell for the Illini three years ago today, but Miami was in the lead over us.

Wow, I remember when John made that Chief Illiniwek pendant so I could put it matching gold and blue beads to wear. I got to wear it when we went out to watch a gme three years ago today, and I still have that necklace hanging with my jewelry right now. (I should remember to wear it when we go out on Saturdays and a game is on, because people in Texas seem to love college sport so much...)

Okay fine, John thought the tiny glass was cute to take a picture one year ago today, but I had to include this because we went to the Bluegrass Tavern, which is pretty much the only kind of music we hear when we go to open mics in Austin. That, and this reminds me that I wore the USMC shirt I designed for his birthday, and I wore his Marines cap (with this discharge pin on it)... I know John wanted barbecue tonight for his birthday, but I wonder if I should wear my Marines clothes for him today...

I know John is holding bottles of Maker’s Mark with his name on it, but I think the only reason he said “I made this” with this photo one year ago today was to make commentary on the ending credits of every X Files episode. (and by the way, holy cow how red does my hair look when back-lit by the sun...)

Happy Birthday John Yotko, to the only man I could ever imagine my life with.

(I searched high and low for a photo the world may not have seen of us, and then I remembered how we flew back from China, changed into in formal wear before going home - like this one dress of my mom’s that I only wore this one time - and we drove straight from O’Hare airport to downtown Chicago to see a string quartet perform Mozart’s the Dissonant. Because you knew how I loved this Mozart piece you searched for a live performance of it, THANK YOU; I think I shed a tear during that performance - we were so jet-lagged, but it was so perfect. I am glad we took that photo then so we could have this memory of this phenomenal time... You DO that, find these perfect moments for us, and I am the luckiest woman in the world that I found you. I love you.)

So Victoria Azarenka and Sam Stosur played last night in the BNP Paribas (and they are replaying it right now), and when it was on last night John said it was funny how I walked into Stosur last year during the 2015 Western& amp; Southern Open. I was just walking with my head down, we bumped into each other, I said excuse me, then John said, “You just bumped into Sam Stosur...” (But really, I never expected players to be walking in the crowd without bodyguards or something.)

But It is a bigger wow that last year marked the first time I ever went to the Wormwood Poetry Collective in Chicago. Because on 3/10/15 I was there and I read my poems one oh three destruction instructions: run faster (filmed with a Canon Power Shot camera, but also released with a Posterize filter), unmarried women and dead bodies everywhere (filmed with a Canon Power Shot camera, but also released with a Posterize filter), and Being God (filmed with a Canon Power Shot camera, but also released with a Posterize filter).

The Tennis Channel is airing the Davis Cup now, but seeing this photo I posted two years ago reminded me that at last year’s Ohio W&S Open I was trying so hard to get photos of pro players with the tennis ball on their racket. Since we moved we won’t go there again, but I am looking forward to seeing live clay court matches April 4th - 10th in Houston (because I would have never made the trip for this match if I lived in Chicago).

And I have no idea why one year ago today I decided to read portions of my India Journals (that later were in my journal/photo book about being in India, titled Bon Voyage!), from 20150122 11:25PM IST, live 3/4/15 at my Chicago open mic the Café Gallery (Cps), but this YouTube video talks about Janet Kuypers loving reading the India Times newspaper there - there were these unbelievably humorous crime blotter stories reported there... It really was entertaining in the mornings to sit there at their breakfast buffet on the other side of the planet for an hour or two and drink their version of American coffee and read these unreal stories from their newspaper. What a riot.

But one year ago today I also posted YouTube video of Janet Kuypers reading C Ra McGuirt’s poem If you read this poem, then you will die from the 2015 “need to know” literary date book, and last year I also released YouTube video of my reading Rex Sexton’s poem this is not a poem (from the same datebook). That was cool reading things live (like from 3/4/15 at the open mic the Café Gallery in Chicago), and that date book was great for it, because every week I have short poems to choose from to read to a live audience... Though Scars still makes the date books, I do not have an open mic to read other people’s writings in regularly...

So, because my phone was dropped (not by me) between Christmas and New Year’s 2+ months ago, I waited for 6 weeks to get replacement glass for the shattered screen I’ve been working with. But then they busted a part inside of it and told me they’ll replace it, so in the meantime I have my old phone that cannot use the camera (or Instagram or Vine), because they busted it more. So I had to use another phone for this picture, because we have a house that john wanted to paint this weekend (while we’ll still have this apartment through March before we break our contract), but he has a cold now and has been staying in bed all weekend while I have (again) been packing boxes for yet another one of these moves. I am sick of boxes, I am sick of packing up my belongings and having them sit in my living space until we can move them again, and it seems that any time some event comes up for either me (like a feature) or us (like a move) John has a migraine, or gets a fever. It exasperates me that (again) I have to do this work on the weekend by myself for the both of us.

Three years ago today I got these 4 clocks wired together to post in the office for the 4 U.S. time zones, and now that we’e starting to get the rooms ready in our new house (we’re painting the office a stately grey, and using two book cabinets around the window for Scars books (including hardbound one time single collections of old saddle-stitch issues of cc&d and Down in the Dirt mag), but I was totally thinking that these 4 time-zone clocks can go overt he window there in the office (I really liked the 4 time zones there, and the clock tickings were never in sync, but I loved hearing the discordance of the ticking quietly in the background while I worked)...

On first glance, it seems that there are not as many vegetarian restaurants in Austin as in Chicago (at least in my 5 months here), so I should really thank John for snapping this photo one year ago today of us at the ChicagoVeg restaurant just a few blocks from my open mic. (And P.S.: no, we do not consider Indian restaurant in the States as true vegetarian restaurants - although in India vegetarianism is more common, in the U.S. they may have vegetarian options, but they include meat to so much of their food that they never truly constitute vegetarian restaurants...)

I talked about things I read at a show a yer ago, but I forgot to mention that three years ago today I released a bunch of YouTube videos from 2/27/13 of my Chicago open mic the Café Gallery (all filmed from the Canon fs200 video camera) of not only my hosting the open mic (which also became a podcast video), as well as my poem Burn It In from the Canon camera and the Sony camera. I also read the Bob Johnston poem the Seven Deadly Colors: Gray and the Joseph Hart poem the Oak and the Michael Lee Johnson poem Moon Sleep (all from from the After the Apocalypse 2013 date book). That night I also read the Esteban Colon poem Firearm Philosophy from the 2/13 issue (v241) of cc&d magazine, and I also read the Kenneth DiMaggio poem American Gothic (#3) from the 2/13 issue (v115) of Down in the Dirt magazine... I really enjoyed being able to read other accepted writings from people in my literary magazines at the open mic there, too.

Because I read a bunch of poems from other authors accepted in (the at the time current issue of) cc&d magazine (the Jan./Feb. 2015 issue, v128) titled “the Curve of Arctic Air”. Because one year ago today I have video not only of my reading Edee Lemoniers’s poem Salvation, and I.B. Rad’s poem Our nine black robed priests, and Jane Stuart’s poem Jazzy Morning, and Kenneth DiMaggio’s poem Reflection #1 from A (perhaps) Heretical Lectio Divina Meditation, and Marianne Szlyk’s poem of Music and Metaphor in Somerville, MA, and Ronald Charles Epstein’s poem Miley Cyrus is Coming, and also Sheryl L. Oh, but who am I kidding... I’m telling you, 2/20 and uploading videos seems to be my thing, because one year ago today I released the Jackie Wolk feature video from 2/12/14 at my Chicago open mic the Café Gallery, and right before I introduced her feature I read the first

poem (one of one destruction instructions: a man calls a woman) that I later read at my destruction instructions reading on 2/27/14 for Paul Jos. Ryan’s book release party... (At this rate, I’m going to have to work on videos so I can release a video for THIS year too!)

One year ago today I “made progress” with my collection book Partial Nudity through Goodreads

So the last time I was at a Taco John’s (to get my hot sauce fix), John asked them there if we could have any extra hot sauce packets for later use, and they gave us like almost a stuffed bag of hot sauce packets. And at this point I’m starting to run low on using them on weekends when we go to a diner for biscuits here in Austin, so it’s funny that two years ago today we passed Marion prison so I could get my Taco John’s fix.
