I know next Sunday is Easter, but the poets I hear from (including most of my “Poetic License” regulars) say that poetry stops for no one... so join us Sunday (on the first Sunday of every month) and come to the Zoom meeting for the “Poetic License virtual open mic 4/4/21” — the Austin, Texas ‘Recycled Reads’ pre-pandemic open mic that is now GLOBAL through the Zoom meeting. If you don’t have the address, you can find it on the Facebook event page, so you can visit the 4/4/21 open mic from 3:30 to 5:30 PM CST. Zoom meeting host John F. McMullen usually starts the Zoom meeting as early as 3:00 PM CST, so people have ~ a half-hour to chat before the open mic starts, and host Janet Kuypers should get there at ~3:20 PM. So let your creative juices flow with us, for I look forward to seeing EVERYONE at the “Poetic License virtual open mic 4/4/21” Zoom meeting this Sunday from 3:00-5:30 PM CST! https://www.facebook.com/events/1936496446497559/ |

Janet Kuypers 20210330 My cat Zach has been gone since Saturday. He was with us for almost 18 years, so it may make sense that I dreamt about him this morning. The way my Chicago poetry open mic’s first host David Rubin would write poems about his dreams, I needed to remember my having these dreams - and memories.
Maybe I should have watched you die.
Once you were sedated, you were laying
back to that medical counter. The way
and I thought you already died. But the doctor
the doctor said to me, and for some insane reason —
We came back from I don’t know where, he went
I went upstairs, into the master bathroom, and
to the drain. I yelled to him, for help, but he
you were dead, and I cannot remember if I
but once I reached into the water to touch
I panicked, tried to lift you to my shirt,
the way you would tighten your pads around
and lay down along my side to sleep at night.
what this dreamworld was trying to tell me.

Janet Kuypers 20210329 Just over 2 days ago we rented “Shoplifters of the World”, a movie about the Smiths breaking up (and one guy hijacking a Denver metal rock radio station to play the Smiths all night), so we binge-watched it like mad for the past 2 days. I even made a point to put on my “Unruly Girl” t-shirt when that song came on during the last airing. Thank you to John for watching it with me so much (while the DJ lamented about Metallica’s “Master of Puppets”). I know I thrashed around a few times to some of the songs (and I even did a high-kick during the “Shiela Take a Bow” line, ‘Boot the grime of this world in the crotch, dear’). As Morrissey said, it is fun to see the celebratory nature of the fans at live shows, because it allows people to let go in ways they normally don’t get to do. So, thank you for that chance. It was worth it. |

Janet Kuypers is with is with John Yotko. 20210328 It’s strange, we didn’t take many photos with Zach, but I think John posted this and/or mailed it to me after I wrote about Zach staying in the tent with us for warmth when we had no power for 5 days in the ice storms. I don’t know if he’s trying to hold us down in this photo, or if he just found a comfortable place to hang out - laying down on me... |
Janet Kuypers I guess we both know what it's like right now... We had Zach since he was a month old; we have Mynx now (we got her when she was older, so she is not as comfortable around us), but I think she sensed it when Zach was finally gone, and I am afraid I have been overloading her with a bit too much attention lately (I can't help it, in the cat-world she's all I've got right now). And let me share this photo of both Zach and Mynx, each sitting in the chairs. You would think they were related by how much they look alike in this photo, but they weren't... (btw, Mynx has the Florida-shaped white patch of fur at her neck.) |

Janet Kuypers Back in our Illinois home, we had a fenced back balcony (this photo), and since his front claws were removed he loved hanging out on the porch (which was like a part of the house). But we don’t have that here in Austin, so he was deathly afraid of going outside since we moved here. (Also, since he lost his sight in his last year here he was also less adventurous.) |
Janet Kuypers I have been reminiscing about how he caught a chipmunk once for us, and even a wasp once (when it was flying in a 25 foot-tall skylight). Once, when we had water from a bath still in a tub and Zach was standing on the tub edge trying to get a bug that landed on the surface, he reached for it, and when his paw touched the water he instinctively lifted his paws in the air as he fell into the tub of water. (He was not pleased.) When I’d put my finger in his front paw between the pads, he would tighten his pads around the tip of my finger like he was holding my hand. In bed, he’d rest his paws on my shoulder when my arm was stretched out, so he could lay down along my body. When we had no power in the ice storms in February, we had a tent on the main floor at night to sleep, and Zach (not Mynx, she’s the scardey-cat) would stay in the tent with us and curl up for warmth. Zach physically had a hard time living this past year, and his condition got progressively worse. The last days for him were so bad that you could tell that he was waiting to die. It is such a shame that he had to pass away this morning, but I have to remember that this is for the best - especially for him. |

In this set, she sang Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome”, Depeche Mode’s “the Bottom Line” (both Janet and John singing, with altered chorus lyrics), her poem/John’s song “Made any Difference ”, the Queen song “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, George Michael’s “Waiting”, Feedback’s “Devotion”, Leonard Cohen’s “Coming Back to You”, Ani DiFranco’s “I am not a Pretty Girl”, Janet & John’s blues song “Tight Rope Affair ”, Hank Williams’ “I’m Free At Last”, Paul Simon’s “Slip Sliding Away”, the Beatles song “Yesterday”, and her song “In Love I Abide”. Then (waiting for John to switch from guitar to mandolin) Janet acoustically sang the beginning of her song “Why”; then she sang the R.E.M. song “You are the Everything” with John playing his mandolin. Going back to John playing his acoustic guitar, Janet then sang the Eurythmics’ “I Need You”, The The’s “Love is Stronger than Death”, George Michael’s “Waiting for that Day”, MFV’s “What We Need In Life”, Peter Gabriel’s “Washing of the Water”, Feedback’s “Vintage Wine”, MFV’s “My Love for You will Stay the Same”, Sinead O’Connor’s “Black Boys on Mopeds”, Don McLean’s “American Pie”, and they closed with the Smiths’ “Ask”, with ‘books’ for ‘bombs’ lyrics changes (this video was filmed from a Panasonic Lumix 2500 camera; posted on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Pinterest, Instagram, and Tumblr). #janetkuypers #janetkuyperssinging #janetkuypersmusic #janetkuypersinstagram |

Janet Kuypers is with is with John Yotko and 18 others. 20210325 Hi there, as host of the “Poetic License” monthly open mic that runs on the 1st Sunday of Every month, I just checked the schedule, and the 1st Sunday of April is Easter Sunday. When this open mic runs at Austin’s Recycled Reads Bookstore (like Labor Day weekend) it would be closed. I have honored the time constraints of the open mic as if it were still at Recycled Reads - though for the Sunday of Labor Day weekend in 2020 (which was closed at Recycled Reads) we *did* run a Zoom meeting on that Sunday. But this is Easter. That’s kind of a big thing for a lot of people. As host, I can say I may have plans on Easter Sunday and cannot make it, but I really wanted to ask and get your pulse on this (so to speak). If you normally come to the “Poetic License” open mic on the 1st Sunday of the month through Zoom meetings, let me know if (A) you think it is a good idea to have a Zoom meeting for “Poetic License” on Easter Sunday, and (B) if you would come to a Zoom meeting for “Poetic License” on Easter Sunday, less than a week and a half from now, on Sunday, April 4th, 2021. Let me know your thoughts on this so I have an idea of what the general consensus is from everyone else. Thanks and I look forward to hearing your opinion on having a “Poetic License” poetry open mic Zoom meeting on Easter Sunday, April 4th, 2021. |
