I usually get Down in the Dirt praises, so when KathyLynn posted cc&d magazine praise with a photo of her material in the open pages of the book “This Be the Scripture”, I *had* to wait for her approval (she’s moving so it took time to respond) to post a thank you to her — and to ALL contributors to cc&d — for being a part of the 30+-year literary magazine, which started as a tiny underground mag and is now published monthly online and in Amazon books. And speaking OF, the influx of so many poetry submissions to cc&d this past month has been WONDERFUL — keep the poetry submissions coming in so the front section of poetry in every issue/book can be bigger and greater EVERY month!

People who made these horrific choices against life by voting against women’s rights never realized how their choices could affect more than *only* women (in cases of people’s medication bannings, for instance). In efforts to eliminate abortions (as some believe that life begins at conception, which goes against what their church or their government believes), they didn’t realize they’d STOP people from being able to get pregnant too.
This is exactly why more than the first half of the CyberWit book “Testament” is filled with pro-women’s-rights post-Roe v. Wade overturning poems, to shed light on issues some may have closed their eyes to.

I have been so pumped, because right now the Merlot is fermenting, and our Mustang grapes (hand-picked from our NXMW vineyard), well, they *are* fermenting, but they were infected and we cannot use them for the Blood Moon Mustang Merlot I’ve been so psyched to create this season. John took a photo of the blood moon (shortly after this post from 6 years ago today), and we *plan* to use it for this Merlot. If we *do* make a Mustang Merlot after grapes grow next season, it might have to have my Eclipse Moon photo as its label. (I’ll post a picture of that Blood Moon Merlot label as a comment — without the Mustang references...)

We saw this MG 50th anniversary convertible for sale in north Chicago years ago. Since then we have driven it to my Beach Poets Illinois features, and even Circle Brewing Company in Austin (in maybe the only state offering a period in a vanity plate, so yay for the Scars Publications website for my license plate). It was sad to see it being towed away, but now this license plate can join all my Illinois license plates on display in my office.

It was worth it going as the tullpa of Diane from Twin Peaks: The Return Season 3 for Halloween in 2017. The 1st Halloween while Twin Peaks was airing I dressed as Laura Palmer (I was literally wrapped in plastic); Chad as Dale Cooper filled his coffee mug with beer all night (and it’s a shame we have no photos from that party). I was talking about being Laura Palmer again for the next Halloween, but this time in the black dress in the red waiting room (I already have the wig), so I think in honor of David Lynch my next Halloween costume’s decided.

I saw a post I made 10 years ago today when on a whim I looked for hardcover old copies of Ayn Rand’s book “Atlas Shrugged”, and I stumbled upon a version in RUSSIAN that later vanished. So 1 year ago today I thought to try again, and eBay had a hardcover 3 vol. set of it in Russian, and it would ship from Ukraine. Although Russia attached Kramatorsk (where this book shipped from) 2 days before I ordered it, the book in Russian about the evils of their form of government, from a small country Russia is still attacking now, arrived just fine (btw, eBay sells it for as low as $39.90, and Amazon sells it for... wait for it... $186.99). In fact, an image of the Ukraine stamps used to ship those books to me illustrated the poem with my Ukraine poem in my CyberWit poetry book “The Universe is in Your Hands”.

I share this memory from 6 years ago today because this is a video of poetry from the Scars Pub. book “Chapter 48 (v 1)” with my cover photo of the Chicago skyline at night from the 96th floor of the (once and always) John Hancock building — before that business closed. I recently saw a news release that talked about all the things Chicagoans all wanted back, and among them were, the STORE Marshall Field’s (I saved a box of Frango Mints with the Marshall Field’s label on it), and, of course, the Signature Lounge at the top of 875 North Michigan Avenue. I’ve been to the Tilt and taken photos of what looks like the view when someone is standing right at the edge on top of this landmark skyscraper in the middle of the day, but it’s not the same as seeing the view of the Chicago skyline at night like that...

John makes fun of me for splitting M&M’s and eating them one half at a time (and I only like the dark chocolate mint-covered M&M’s, which they stopped making and now only release milk-chocolate mint-covered M&M’s during the Christmas season, which I asked John to order for Christmas this year for me, which he had to buy from Amazon because we couldn’t find them in stores). I just saw John’s post from 11 years ago today saying I was equating it with Planck lengths (I think John wanted to sound intelligent bringing up Planck before we ever created the “Walk the Planck” Enigma wine, that the Walking Seed website still doesn’t show the most recent label for online). Last night when John was a bit down, I offered him a half of a red mint M&M and he said no. I ate half & extended the other half to him, and he said, “How can I refuse chocolate...”

When we were watching a multi-part series about the Cold War last night that started with a discussion of its history and talked about them asking Oppenheimer where it would be safe to do all this research for creating this bomb, Oppenheimer said to go to New Mexico. Then they showed this shot of New Mexico on the screen... All I could see in this massive rock structure was a tall thin person with a pic that he was excavating something there, but that he was wearing a gas mask and was in a shower after dealing with the radiation from the nuclear testing that they decided to do there. I am positive that no one sees what I see in this rock, but I swear it looks like an art form when I see this side of this rock.

It was 30 years ago last night that I decided to become a vegetarian (and right at the anniversary of “Vegetarian Planet” hoodie winning at a vegetarian Chicago New Year’s event). Today is the 30th anniversary of Janet choosing a vegetarian diet. She asked for a special meal so I made a vegan turkey roast with cranberry sauce and butternut squash mezzelune in a thai curry sauce. Dessert will be a vegan chocolate mousse made with avocado and coconut cream instead of egg and milk.

After wearing my “Big Fun” Heathers t-shirt last night because it’s Mardi Gras weekend (that shirt was from my favorite Halloween costume in New Orleans one year), I spent yesterday, and this morning roasting spent grains from the now fermenting proto gothinator. After roasting and now grinding it all, since I’m stocked up on the stuff, I can now use it to add protein and fiber and gothiness to all my future meals.

It might sound strange to roast spent grains after homebrewing, but they are packed with protein and fiber and can be added to any meal... besides, adding proto gothinator spent grains to meals sounds kinda cool, and I’m running low on the spent grains from some of our other beers.

This YouTube video of my poem “Vegetarian Stands by the Meat Sale” (shared on 2/28/14 & 2/28/17) may have appeared in several books, but it *also* was in a ‘Tag Team’ reading with C Ra... C Ra McGuirt gave me a wrestling belt and inaugurated me as a Tag Team Poet; we did a Tag Team Reading on 5/18/13, and at one point he wanted to do a book with me (which is why we took a Tag Team photo). We never produced that book (may he rest in peace), but that pic’s the impetus for me to set up a similarly-styled (with a nod to Warhol) cover image with that belt for my next CyberWit book on protest and fighting back, which I hope to release in 2026. But in the meantime, the chapbook from our show has that anger spark too.

8 years ago today I shared a YouTube video from 2/19/17 of my reading my haiku “earth” during the intro performance to “Kick Butt Poetry” in Austin — which later appeared in the book “(pheromones) haiku, Instagram, Twitter, and poetry”.

After this Chicagoan moved to Texas, I saw firsthand the oppression that led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which stopped abortions in some states but also stunted women’s right TO children through IVF clinics, & drug restrictions for people with auto-immune illnesses. I wrote the book “Testament” with over the first half about women’s rights post Dobbs v. Jaskson, and at one of my readings at The Gallery Cabaret I shared my long poem “Surprised at What You Might Find, and I think the Chicagoans there weren’t appropriately attuned to the risks these laws are to everyone. (I *really* thank the positive feedback after I read this poem at the “Poetic License 2/2/25 Global Open Mic,” that really meant the world to me, thank you), but it made me wonder if Chicagoans don’t get the trouble this country is potentially in (just because some laws are on your side here, not all of them are — and these laws you’re cushioned from the violation of here hurt other Americans a LOT more). So when I saw this post from David Buddha-Hargarten, it gave me comfort that we’re not alone in this struggle. It’ll be a long road, but we’re not alone. Thank you.

It is accomplished! After years of saving boxes from fast food restaurants of vegetarian products that they no longer sell or labels from vegetarian restaurants that are no longer in business (okay, and paying reverence to some vegetarian places that still exist today), I had so much material paying homage to vegan and vegetarian products on top of my fridge that by Christmas time, I had to take it all down and put it into one large poster. The poster was assembled in January and has been sitting in my office on my Reader box for the past few months. Just today (thank you John) we managed to give that poster its proper place in our kitchen.
“Fusion” is a project with poetry from Chicago-based Janet Kuypers mixed with music from Madison, WI-based musicians Paul Baker, the Bastard Trio, & the JoAnne Pow!ers Trio. The poem “Medication”, recorded with this music, appears in the book “Fusion”, on Amazon.

I have just been reading articles that dark matter does not exist, that it’s actually how time is sped by the clustering of galaxies, explaining the inflated acceleration of the Universe (a theory I’ve supported before scientists jumped on this dark matter bandwagon when they couldn’t explain a varying “Hubble constant”). But what DOES exist is the book “Dark Matter: the Mind of Janet Kuypers”, because the poems “Other Horizons”, “the Mind of John” and “two “Not Mute” Haikus” appear in the Janet Kuypers poetry book “Dark Matter: the Mind of Janet Kuypers” from Scars Publications, which was released as both a 6"x 9" paperback book and a 5½" x 8½" paperback book from the Lulu printer:

This was first shared in 2011 (back when my 1st Chicago open mic that I hosted was at the Café in the blue room with the giant fish on the wall and didn’t have the name “the Café Gallery”, and I was so new to YouTube that I couldn’t even post videos long enough to share my entire open mic, so I only recorded intros), but this was worth sharing again 7 years ago today (before the Café shut down and the Lincoln Ave. building was destroyed). In this YouTube of the intro to the Café on 2/8/11 I read poetry from the lit mags I edit — poetry from different artists in the v217 cc&d and v091 Down in the Dirt, plus my poems “Other Horizons”, “the Mind of John” and “two “Not Mute” Haikus” from the book “Dark Matter: the Mind of Janet Kuypers” (which, btw, I kept that dark matter pic as the background image for my video editing laptop).

On 2/20/13 I uploaded a YouTube video of Janet Kuypers’ “Last Minute” feature on 2/13/13 at The Gallery Cabaret’s “The Café Gallery” in Chicago, but I also released it on Facebook on 2/20/17. In this last-minute feature I read poems from my lit magazines and poetry from the 2004 poetry collection book “Oeuvre” — but half of the poems I read in this feature, “Medication”, “Death is a Dog”, and “Fantastic Car Crash”, all *also* appear on the CD & book, “Burn Through Me”.
Now living in Austin, I don’t get a chance to enjoy my favorite beer from the oldest micro brewery in Illinois — Gudenteit, from Mickey Finn’s. Being trapped at home after the cold front hit Austin yesterday, I dlooked in my fridge to see if I had any beer I wanted to drink. I looked in the back of the mini fridge and saw one can of this Gudenteit beer from last summer when I visited Chicago. I thought there was no way that just one brewery pour into 1 old can would still be good, so I had to try it, and man, it was delicious.

I swear that it’s becoming like a hothouse inside my office (which happens to be the hottest room in this house because it’s right above the garage and all the heat rises to here) but it’s the only place to keep my plants safe from the wrath of my cats. (And yes, that Jay’s potato chip bag for my future potato plant is nestled between my asparagus plant and my spider plant behind the pineapple plant.)
Seeing this post from 1 year ago today reminds me that I *saved* that pot of dirt and Jay’s potato chip bag for future potato-growing, and I *think* I saved a potato that we didn’t eat, waiting for eyes to grow. I had it growing in the office before (which I’ll have to do again since our little kitties Titan and Callisto, which are getting bigger and bigger every day, would attack that dirt and plant, I’m sure it), so let me look for that “potato chop pot” and potatoes and see if I can grow potatoes in my potato chip bag again. (P.S.: It’s 30° out, which seems the perfect time to start growing potatoes in a Jay’s potato chip bag in my office.)

John and I have had champagne every day on Valentine’s Day weekend this weekend. Friday night we had champagne in our wedding classes and our 10th-anniversary wedding glasses. Last night we drank champagne in the wedding glasses my parents gave us. I thought it was appropriate that tonight we finished the champagne with the beautiful glasses that he found when we were traveling to Finland... But the glasses don’t matter because I am with the man I love. I love you John, and I always will.

I was thrilled to share it on Goodreads and share it in this post from 6 years ago today, but I just saw how high the Lulu printer raised the paperback book retail price, so I dropped the retail price for this paperback by about 40%.

The Janet Kuypers Gages Lake poetry feature “Uncorrect” was later released as a “Uncorrect chapbook”. Scars Publications mixed that chapbook with the 1996 chap “Content With Too Much Light”, the 1996 chap “Politics & Violence”, and the 1995 chap “Somebody Say Something” to create the BOOK “Uncorrect”, now on Amazon.

As I am sitting in my office this morning, I look out the window and see a flower truck stop in front of my house. As I got to the front door he gave me beautifully arranged roses, and then a separate bouquet of tulips, which so caught me by surprise. John give me roses five days after we met and tulips shortly thereafter, when he knew I was dutch — not on Valentine’s Day, so this was such a pleasant surprise. Thank you so much, and I love you. (I had to place them both in the office behind closed doors because I had to keep the cats away from poisonous tulips, and Titan was on his heels, trying to reach up for the tulips before I got them away...)

Back in 2011, Scars Publications released a 1995 chapbook (that was later released online in 2006 with a different cover) that was turned into the ISBN# book “Prepare Her For This” (with cover art honoring the no-longer-available original chapbook cover, in my first Logan Square apartment). In 2011 I talked of wanting to make this an audio CD, but 9 years ago today I re-shared this book release (where I’m wearing a woman’s symbol necklace pendant that I *still* wear), and I am glad that if the original chapbook is not out there, this book is, so people around the globe can pick it up on Amazon.
On 2/9/14 I wrote many haiku based on thought-provoking Janet Kuypers poems, including “destroy”, which was shared to @janetkuypers on Twitter 11 years ago today that was just shared to Facebook today (along with more haiku, with a “study” post, a “jumped” post, an “instead” post, a “floor” post, a “hold” post, and a “defenses” post). These haiku all appeared in the mini-book “100 Haikus”, which appears as a section of the Janet Kuypers poetry book “Partial Nudity”.
